The September 16th Homoground Open Mic Night at The Bar was AWESOME.
It seems that folks have settled into their fall semester routines, and perhaps that's why this event saw more college students than previous events. Go team!
Featured artist Sam Peterson was quick to teach them a lesson or two about how NOT to buy furniture and how to politely overlook questions about one's genitals. The lovely Candrice Penn assisted him with a poem which was--as far as I can tell--not about Sam's junk or home furnishings.
In all seriousness, Peterson delves into the issues of substance abuse and gender identity while maintaining a sense of humor uncommonly associated with these issues. IMHO, it's the kind of approach that will make this stuff more manageable for people struggling through it and encourage discussions that end the stigma surrounding it.
I highly recommend checking out Sam's websites:http://octopusandback.com
Several spoken word artists rocked the house, including PM Jones, Morgan Brooks and Eboni Dean.
We also had at least three rappers: Kayman, Kourtney Barnes and Amadi Whitfield and friends.
Comedian Deb Aronin came back and KILLED a set about public bathrooms and strip club/coffee shops near Fayetteville. Disgustingly accurate.
And of course, our wonderful singer-songwriters crooned, screamed and made us cream: Sara Jo Taylor, Danni Sochet, Max Rocket, Fredi, Alyssa Royal, and Steven Cooper.
The Adam & Eve Featured Performer Raffle Winners were Juno Krahn and Kayla Williamson. Congrats!
The next Homoground Open Mic is 10/21. Halloween theme encouraged...I'm going as Purdy Holsom. Hope to see you there!
